Who Pays For the Drinks?

At a traditional wedding, who is responsible for supplying liquid refreshments, the Groom's family or the Bride's family?

Dear Eric,

Traditionally, the family of the bride gave the wedding and reception. This included supplying  liquid refreshment. However, it has become increasingly  popular for the parents of the groom to "offer" to pay for alcoholic beverages during the reception.

Today, the lines of "who pays for what" are no longer strictly followed.  Families often get together and decide what works best for everyone, while staying within the anticipated budget.  An open bar is also a consideration.
